Tafseer of Surah Al-Inshiqaq
Surah Al-Inshiqaq, also known as "Idha al-Sama'un Shaqqat", is a Makkan surah. It was revealed after Surah Al-Infitar and before Surah Al-Rum. The number of its verses is twenty-five in the Makkan and Kufan recensions of the Qur'an, whereas in the Shami and Basran recensions, it consists of twenty-three verses.
This noble surah begins by describing the signs of the Last Hour. Then, it elaborates on the conditions of the righteous (sa‘da’) and the wicked (ashqiyaa’) on the Day of Judgment. In the course of this, the surah encourages the believers to increase in faith and righteous deeds, while warning the disbelievers about the evil consequences of their persistence in disbelief and transgression.
The phrase: { انشقت } (Inshaqqat)
comes from "inshiqaq" (الانشقاق), which means splitting apart, cracking, or bursting open, causing a complete transformation in its state and disrupting its natural order.
As Allah the Exalted states:
{ يَوْمَ تُبَدَّلُ الأرض غَيْرَ الأرض والسماوات وَبَرَزُواْ للَّهِ الواحد الْقَهَّارِ }
"On the Day when the earth will be changed to another earth, and so will be the heavens; and they will appear before Allah, the One, the Supreme." (Qur’an 14:48)
The splitting of the sky is mentioned in multiple verses of the Qur'an, including:
{ وَيَوْمَ تَشَقَّقُ السمآء بالغمام }
"And [remember] the Day when the heaven will split open with [clouds]." (Qur’an 25:25)
{ فَإِذَا انشقت السمآء فَكَانَتْ وَرْدَةً كالدهان }
"Then when the sky is split open and becomes rosy like oil." (Qur’an 55:37)
This emphasizes the great cosmic transformation that will take place on the Day of Judgment.
Ma Sha Allah
