(O Allah, na You be my Lord, no other god dey wey deserve make dem worship am except You. Na You create me, and na You I be Your servant. I go try my best to keep di covenant and promise wey I make to You. I dey run go You side make You protect me from di bad things wey I don do. I gree say na You dey bless me, and I gree say I dey sin. Abeg, forgive me, because na only You fit forgive sin.)

Explanation of di Hadith

Ash-Shaikh Al-Allaamah AbdurRazzaq Al-Badr explain say:

Dis du’a big well well because e join di meaning of Tawbah (repentance), Tadhallul (humble submission) to Allah, and Inabah (turning back to Allah).

Di Prophet (ﷺ) call am Sayyid al-Istighfar because e better pass all di other du’a wey person fit use ask for forgiveness. Di word Sayyid mean di one wey be oga for goodness pass all e people. So dis du’a be like leader among all di du’as wey dey for forgiveness.

Dis du’a start with praise for Allah, then confession say na servant of Allah we be, say na only Him we suppose worship, say we dey try keep di covenant wey we make with am, and say we dey seek protection from di bad things wey we don do.

Di Prophet (ﷺ) acknowledge say Allah na di one wey dey bless us, and e confess e sins, then e ask Allah to forgive am because na only Allah fit forgive sin.

Meaning of di Words Inside Dis Du’a

"Allahumma" – E mean di same thing as "Ya Allah" but e get special way wey e be.

"Anta Rabbi" – E mean "na You be my Lord," no other lord or creator dey except You.

"La ilaha illa Anta" – E mean "No other god deserve worship except You."

"Khalaqtani wa ana abduka" – E mean "Na You create me, and na You I be Your servant."

"Wa ana alaa ahdika wa wa’dika mastata’tu" – E mean "I dey try keep di promise wey I make to You as much as I fit."

"A’udhu bika min sharri ma sana’tu" – E mean "I dey beg You make You save me from di bad things wey I don do."

"Abuu’u laka bini’matika ‘alayya, wa abu’u bidhanbi" – E mean "I gree say na You dey bless me, and I gree say I dey sin."

"Faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa Anta" – E mean "Abeg, forgive me because na only You fit forgive sin."

Why Dis Du’a Carry Weight for Morning & Evening?

Di Prophet (ﷺ) tok say:
"Anybody wey recite dis du’a for morning with full belief, and e die before evening, Allah go put am for Jannah. And anybody tok am for night and e die before morning, Allah go put am for Jannah."

Why? Because di person start e day and end e day by accepting:

  • Say Allah na di only one wey deserve worship

  • Say we be servants of Allah

  • Say Allah dey bless us steady

  • Say we dey sin, but we dey beg for forgiveness

  • Say na only Allah fit forgive sin

Person wey dey do dis every morning and night, e don start and end e day with humility, submission, and Tawheed. E dey very possible say Allah go wipe e sins and put am for Jannah.

May Allah give us di chance to recite dis du’a every morning and evening, and may e forgive all our sins, Aameen!
